Creating new pages for your website or posts for your blog are easy to do with WordPress.  But before we begin, let’s distinguish between pages and posts.

Pages are static webpages that are always in the same place.  This is a page.  It will always be here under Resources and WordPress Instructions, unless you decide to delete it.  Most people, when they think about a website, they’re thinking about static pages.  And most traditional websites had ONLY pages.

Posts are organized according to when they were published and they come up in the blog portion of your website.  As you know, the characteristic feature of a blog is that the most recent post is displayed at the top with all the other posts displayed in reverse chronological order down the page.  As time passes, these older posts end up in the archives.

The point is that posts are not always in the same place.  On the day they’re published, they’re at the very top.  As more posts are published, they move down the page.  And eventually, they end up in the archives.  Each post has a “permalink” which is associated ONLY with that particular post, but you can find the same post using other tools like tags, categories and archives.

The advantage you have with this Tactical Execution package is that you have BOTH a website AND a blog.  The blog is one small part of the website.  That means you can have static pages with your company specifics or information about the products or services you provide.  In addition, you have a blog where you can maintain an ongoing conversation with your audience.

Here’s the rule of thumb.  If you want to build out your website, you want to create a page.  If you want to add something new to your blog, you want to create a post.

In either case, just login to your Dashboard to get started.  From there, you can click [Write a Page] or [Write a Post] and jump right in.  Otherwise, you can click [Write] first and then select either [Post] or [Page] next.

You will be forwarded to the edit screen of your new page and can immediately begin writing your new page or post.  Remember to check whether your in the [Visual] tab or the [HTML] tab.  Also, always use your primary keywords in your page or post title.  This is valuable real estate and you want to make sure you’re taking advantage of that.

If you’re creating a new page, be sure to scroll down the edit screen and select a [Page Parent].  That will determine where in the page hierarchy it will reside.  Keep in mind that those pages that do NOT have a page parent will show up in the horizontal navigation bar across the top of your website.

Also, when creating a page, you may not want people to be able to enter comments.  If so, you can deselect comments on the edit screen, under [Comments & Pings].  Other options include page order and privacy settings including password protection.
